Astronomical observations show that the galaxies have a flat rotation curve. Clearly, they are supposed to have a different density distribution than the other familiar objects like planets and stars. Here a general discussion and related concepts on 'escape velocity' as taught in higher secondary and introductory undergraduate classes are extended to derive a simplistic formula for the escape velocity of an object from a galaxy.
